A High Court in Nairobi on Tuesday, May 7, imposed a travel ban on former Murang’a governor Mwangi Wa Iria’s wife following her alleged involvement in graft.

In his judgement, Chief Magistrate Victor Wakhumile ordered the accused to immediately deposit her travel documents with the court.

Wakhumile while issuing the orders called on the suspect to refrain from travelling outside the country without prior court’s consent.

The order was issued after Ira’s wife appeared before the anti-corruption court on links to the misappropriation of Ksh351 million county funds.

During the court’s proceedings, the judge issued bail or bond options for the accused after she pleaded not guilty to the charges.

The prosecution through Senior Principal Prosecution Counsel Susan Keli, did not oppose the bail or bond application but instead made a plea to the judge.

In her plea to the court, the prosecutor asked the court to impose a bond or bail commensurate with the weight of the crime the ex-governor’s wife has been accused of.

In particular, the prosecutor Keli asked the court to consider the seriousness of the charges and the huge amounts involved in the graft allegations.

Following the prosecution’s submissions, Iria’s wife was released on a Ksh5 million bond with a surety of a similar amount or an alternative cash bail of Ksh1 million.

Iria’s wife was first arrested on April 17 by the Ethics and Anti-Corruption (EACC) detectives, she was arrested alongside the governor’s brother.

While detailing the arrest of the governor’s wife, EACC spokesperson, Erick Ngumbi noted the commission was still in pursuit of 6 other suspects.

The two were accused of involvement in a fraudulent scheme conducted in conjunction with the county government of Murang’a during Mwangi Wa Iria’s tenure as the governor.
