CS Murkomen Announces 5 Counties to Benefit From Ksh30 Billion Nairobi Railway City Project

Transport Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen on Thursday progressed talks with United Kingdom officials on the planned construction of the Nairobi Railway City project.

Murkomen during his meeting with UK High Commissioner Neil Wigan noted the multi-billion project would benefit several counties including Nairobi.

Other counties set to benefit from the Ksh30 billion railway infrastructure programme include; Kiambu, Murang’a, Kajiado, and Machakos.

According to Murkomen, the legacy project would lead to the creation of 10,000 direct and indirect jobs in the country.

“The project will also provide a clean and green urban space and bolster Nairobi’s position as a commercial hub,” the Transport CS commented.

Murkomen further stated that the Nairobi Railway City would help reduce traffic congestion, curb carbon emissions and facilitate faster movement of people.

“Modernising Kenya’s public transport system also featured prominently in our discussions, including introducing the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system and modern commuter trains,” Murkomen stated.

The project is set to be implemented on 425 acres of underutilized land within the Central Business District (CBD) of Nairobi.

According to Kenya Railways, a vast share of the land is owned by the railway corporation and other government institutions.

The iconic multi-modern urban development project will be the first one of its kind in Africa and is set to provide an integration of travel, business and leisure.

Nairobi Railway City infrastructure project first came into limelight way back in 2020 during a UK-Africa investment summit, an event held in London.

It is anticipated that the mega project will be completed by 2030 in a move aimed at boosting Nairobi city’s global reputation.
