Detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) mounted a search for a man who vanished after contraband valued at Ksh435,000 was found abandoned at a bus booking company.

In a statement on Monday, the agency revealed that the suspect, who is still at large, had approached the bus company seeking to transport the goods to an unknown location.

The narcotics, which had been concealed in sacks of beans, had been left unattended with reports indicating that the owner was seeking clearance.

Acting on information from members of the public, the detectives under the leadership of SCCIO Moyale responded to a report of a suspicious person with four sacks of beans at the bus booking office,” DCI explained.

“Upon arrival, they discovered that the sacks had been left unattended at the entrance of the said booking office, and the owner was nowhere to be found, as he was claimed to have gone for authorization papers.”

Since the sacks seemed suspicious, the detectives employed the services of a sniffer dog which assured them that the goods were contraband.

“The four sacks were escorted to DCI Moyale offices where they were opened, revealing twenty-two (22) bales of cannabis sativa with an estimated street value of Ksh 435,000,” added the statement.

The owner of the goods then vanished forcing the detectives to launch a manhunt against him while the recovered cannabis sativa was taken into police custody.

The arrest came a few days after DCI detectives nabbed two suspects linked to the violent robbery and murder of a 23-year-old businesswoman in Kondele in January 2024.

The two were found with an AK47 used in the murder and 36 rounds of live ammunition that was used in the murder.

“The slain woman identified as Grace Awino Adero operated a shop within the Kondele area, before two armed merchants of death accosted her and her husband on January 27, robbing them of the day’s proceeds and shooting her dead. The husband narrowly escaped,” read the DCI report.
