Kabarnet Alumni Fly to Rwanda to Surprise Teacher After 37 Years

Former National Assembly Deputy Speaker Moses Cheboi joined his Kabarnet High School alumni during a surprise visit to Rwanda to honour their former teacher, Oscar Kimanuka, 37 years after graduation.

Cheboi, a former Kuresoi Member of Parliament, was joined by his classmates who are now influential figures in several sectors spanning law, business, education as well as public services.

The alumni who belonged to the school’s alumni association chaired by prominent lawyer Kamonjo Kiburi organised the event which took place on May 11 in the East African country where the tutor hails from.

A report by the New Times, a Rwandese publication, indicated that the tutor had served at the school between 1983 and 1987.

Cheboi noted that Kimanuka was an integral part of their academic development beyond his designated subjects of history and literature.

“He taught us more than just history and literature; he instilled in us a sense of purpose,” Cheboi told the gathering.

“He contributed highly to our success today, where now we all have good positions wherever we are, and we thank him for that.”

Kiburi corroborated the former deputy speaker’s sentiments noting that despite serving at the school in the 1980s, his influence continued to live on.

“He contributed significantly to shaping who we are today,” the lawyer stated.

Kimanuka, while at the event, noted that the gesture from his former students for traveling from Kenya was humbling.

“To have former students, whom I taught nearly four decades ago, remember and honor me in this way is incredibly humbling,” he stated.

Cheboi served as the National Assembly Deputy Speaker between 2017 and 2018. President William Ruto later appointed him as the Chairperson of the Advocates Complaints Commission.
