Kenya Braces For Cyclone Hidaya’s Weakened Impact, Heavy Rains Expected To Continue

The Kenyan government, through the Ministry of Interior and the Kenya Meteorological Department (KMD), has provided an update on the anticipated impact of tropical Cyclone Hidaya. While caution and adherence to safety guidelines remain crucial, KMD reports that the storm has weakened significantly.

Heavy Rainfall Forecast

  • Sunday, May 5th: Offshore along the Kenyan coast.
  • Monday, May 6th – Tuesday, May 7th: Intensifying inland and along the coast.

Kisumu Already Impacted

As of Sunday, May 5th, Kisumu County is experiencing the most severe effects, with seven villages in the Ombeyi location completely submerged. Governor Anyang’ Nyong’o acknowledges collaboration with the national government, Coast Guard, and Kenya Red Cross for rescue efforts.

Areas Potentially Affected by Moderate to Heavy Rainfall

  • Coast: Kwale, Mombasa, Kilifi, Lamu (flooding possible)
  • Nyanza: Kisumu, Kisii, Nyamira, Migori, Siaya, Homabay Central (flooding possible)
  • Western: Kakamega, Vihiga, Busia, Bungoma, Trans Nzoia
  • Central/Mt. Kenya: Nyeri, Muranga, Kirinyaga, Kiambu, Nyandarua
  • Eastern: Machakos, Kitui, Makueni, Embu, Tharaka Nithi, Meru
  • Nairobi Area: Heavy downpour expected
  • Rift Valley: Heavy downpour expected
  • North Eastern: Less rain expected, but flooding possible due to overflowing dams and rivers.
