Kenya is rolling out the red carpet for Indian travelers, aiming to capture the attention of group and high-end tourists from this rapidly growing market. Currently ranked as the 6th largest source market for Kenya’s tourism industry, India presents a golden opportunity for Kenya to expand its tourism footprint in Asia.
Kenya’s Tourism Revival Post-COVID
Kenya’s tourism sector has been on an upward trajectory since the pandemic, with the Indian market posting a 12.4% growth last year. Visitor arrivals surged from 95,038 in 2023 to an impressive 106,863 in 2024. This growth underscores India’s increasing interest in Kenya as a top travel destination.
To solidify this momentum, the Kenya Tourism Board (KTB), alongside 12 travel trade companies, is currently hosting roadshows across Ahmedabad, Bangalore, and Kolkata. These events are designed to showcase Kenya’s unique offerings and attract Indian travelers seeking unforgettable experiences.
Why India is Key for Kenya
KTB CEO June Chepkemei emphasized that Kenya is more than just its iconic wildlife safaris and the Masai Mara. By diversifying its tourism offerings, Kenya is positioning itself as a destination that caters to various traveler profiles, including honeymooners, adventure enthusiasts, filmmakers, and business professionals attending conferences.
“Kenya is a diverse tourism destination,” said Chepkemei. “Air connectivity and the Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) facility have significantly increased interest among Indian travelers.”
With improved infrastructure such as new hotels, upgraded roads, and enhanced airstrips, Kenya continues to create unforgettable experiences for its visitors.
MICE: A Game-Changer for Indian Travelers
The Indian market is also drawn to Kenya for business tourism. Meeting Incentives Conferences and Exhibitions (MICE) have become a major driver of growth. Safari Trail CEO Rajay Thethy revealed that Indian groups often combine business with leisure, spending up to five days in Kenya.
“ETA facilities have streamlined group bookings, making it easier for Indian travelers to choose Kenya for MICE,” Thethy added.
Strong Air Connectivity Drives Growth
Air travel between India and Kenya is booming, thanks to airlines like Indigo and Air India. Indigo Air, which launched direct flights to Nairobi over a year ago, boasts a 63% market share in India and operates daily flights from Mumbai. According to Indigo Trade Sales Manager Tarun Arora, the airline has been flying at 95% capacity in recent months, with plans to increase capacity during the busy summer season.
Air India, in collaboration with Kenya Airways, also operates three flights daily from New Delhi and is expected to add more frequencies in the coming months. Kenya Airways, which runs two daily direct flights from Mumbai to Nairobi, plays a pivotal role in transporting Indian travelers.
What This Means for Kenya
Kenya recorded 2,253,428 arrivals last year, a 16% growth compared to 2023. With the Indian market’s potential and strategic marketing efforts, 2025 looks promising for the tourism sector.
From the lush landscapes of the Masai Mara to the pristine beaches of the Kenyan coast, Kenya offers an unparalleled mix of adventure, luxury, and culture. With better connectivity, streamlined visa processes, and targeted campaigns, Indian travelers are discovering why Kenya is the ultimate destination for both leisure and business.
If you’re an Indian traveler looking for a mix of adventure and relaxation, Kenya is calling! Whether you’re planning a group safari, a romantic honeymoon, or a business trip with leisure on the side, Kenya promises an experience like no other.
