ODM Officials Approached Me for DP Slot – Governor Says

Murang’a County Governor Irungu Kang’ata shared on Wednesday that he was once considered for the deputy president role ahead of the 2022 General Election but declined the offer.

The governor, who spoke on Inooro TV about various political topics, including Donald Trump’s election win and the impeachment of former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, focused on the moment when the proposal was made to him.

Kang’ata disclosed that there had been discussions about him being chosen as former Prime Minister Raila Odinga’s running mate in 2022. He mentioned that senior members of the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party had approached him, but he turned down the offer for personal reasons that he chose not to share.

“I was asked by high-ranking ODM officials to be their deputy president candidate, but I declined,” Kang’ata admitted.

“I prefer not to go into the details as it’s a personal matter, but I appreciated the consideration,” the governor added during the interview.

He also revealed that some leaders, including a Murang’a County MCA, had advised him against accepting the position.

“Some people cautioned me not to accept, and I had my reasons. I told them I would consider it, but I have always disagreed with Raila,” he elaborated.

Before the 2022 General Election, Kang’ata, who was the Senate Majority Whip at the time, gained attention after he sent a letter to then-President Uhuru Kenyatta rejecting the Building Bridges Initiative (BBI).

In the letter, Kang’ata explained to Uhuru that the BBI was not well-received in Mt. Kenya, clarifying that his stance was communicated in good faith.

Regarding Gachagua’s impeachment, the governor explained that he chose to remain silent throughout the process as he didn’t want to take any sides.

He further stated that he distanced himself from the impeachment discussions since he was not part of the National Assembly, and his opinion would not have influenced the outcome.

His comments surfaced as the country welcomed a new Deputy President, Kithure Kindiki, after Rigathi Gachagua’s impeachment. Kindiki was sworn in on November 1, 2024.
