Ruto Appoints Kenyan Ambassador to US Lazarus Amayo to AU Special Envoy Role

President William Ruto on Tuesday appointed United States Ambassador to Kenya Lazarus Amayo as the Special Envoy of the African Union Champion for Institutional Reforms.

In his announcement, Ruto stated that Amayo would help the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in steering the President’s unique mandate as a member of the African Union.

In particular, Amayo is expected to play a critical role in driving AU’s institutional reforms in liaison with the State Department for Foreign Affairs and the African Union institutions.

Lazarus Amayo is the outgoing ambassador of Kenya to the United States and has served in different senior public capacities.

Among the roles he previously served include Permanent Representative to the United Nations (2018-2020) and High Commissioner of Kenya to the United Kingdom (2014 – 2018).

He also served as Permanent Representative of Kenya to the International Maritime Organization (IMO) and the Commonwealth
Organization.

Additionally, the Head of State has appointed Simon Mwangi Kamau as the new Deputy State House Comptroller with the concurrence of the Public Service Commission (PSC).

Kamau is the immediate former Secretary General of the Amani National Congress Party (ANC), and whose party leader is the Foreign Affairs Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi.

He is also an advocate of the High Court of Kenya with over a decade of experience in law, management, strategic planning and policy formulation.

The new deputy comptroller holds a Master of Law degree from the University of Nairobi, a postgraduate diploma in law from the Kenya School of Law and a Bachelor of Laws degree from Makerere University in Uganda.

He has also undertaken postgraduate training in Global Entrepreneurship and Innovation at the internationally acclaimed Manning School of Business, University of Massachusetts.

“With the immense expertise and experience of the newly appointed officials, I am confident that the two public officers will contribute enormously towards the realization of our shared aspirations,” Ruto stated.
