Death Reported as 46-Passenger Matatu Overturns on Mombasa Road at Sultan Hamud

matatu carrying 46 passengers was involved in a fatal road accident after it overturned in a notorious blackspot at Mombasa Road on Wednesday, May 15. 

The accident happened in the Sultan Hamud area, days after the same region witnessed the collision of 5 vehicles leading to the death of 10 people.

According to Mukaa Sub County Police Commander Barnabas Ngeno, one person was confirmed to have lost his life during the Wednesday morning accident. 

The young man who passed on was reported to have been swinging on the door when the accident occurred.

It is believed that the deceased was a tout and the death could have been avoided if he was buckled in his seat. 

Several people were injured and rushed to hospital where they received treatment. 

The matatu at the time was plying at the Kyambeke-Sultan Hamud route in Makueni County heading to the capital through the Mombasa-Nairobi highway. 

Good samaritans from Wa Utu market which is near the scene of the accident rushed to help the passengers who were trapped inside the vehicle. 

Additionally, police officers and first responders arrived at the scene of the accident and rushed the injured to the hospital. 

National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) previously warned drivers to be cautious with most roads damaged by intense downpours witnessed in various parts of the country. 

Close to 8,000 Kenyans lost their lives in the first four months of 2024 with most accidents attributed to careless driving. 

The Wednesday accident happened at a time when NTSA had erected different inspection points in Makueni County.
